What is the difference between job search coaching and career change coaching?
Job search coaching and career coaching in many instances are identical. The exception is when someone hires a career coach not because they want to get a new job at a new employer but rather to reach their career goals, like becoming a better leader, getting promoted faster, and/or otherwise doing a great job at their current company. This latter case is also called career advancement coaching or even executive coaching, depending on the current stage of one’s career.

How can a career coach help you make your career plan?

When a professional takes a step towards a career transition or career shift a career change coach can use a well-defined framework to help the professional define their career goals. The coach wants to make sure that one's career goals are in alignment with career change the professional is considering. Once that is verified the transition coach can help the professional to develop a career plan and then start working toward landing jobs that are in line with those goals.

How can the coach support you in executing your plan?

A career change is especially challenging when a professional is actively doing one kind of work while also trying to implement a career transition. It is during these career transitions that the coach can play a very important role as an accountability partner. Coaches can help the client to "show up" and act consistently toward achieving the goals they have set with the assistance of their coach. When a professional is working on their own, it is common to run into challenges that at the time may appear insurmountable. This is a difficult experience when one wants to change career and may lead to losing confidence in one's ability to make the transition. During such career change the coach can help to maintain perspective and not lose sight of the fact that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the career change process.

Do all career coaches work with career change clients?

Any coach can work with career change clients. But some coaches, especially those who coach through our practice are specialized in career change cases. Because of the extensive experience in the field and the frameworks we have developed it is easier for our coaches to identify patterns, recommend winning strategies and coach toward expeditious outcomes.

As a career coach associated with our practice, we do not endorse any particular platform. Can coaching help improve work-life balance where you work? 

Work-life balance is definitely an area where your career coach can coach you to overcome the patterns that lead to those imbalances and help you mentally and practically re-frame your behavior without fear of loss or other perceived threats or pleasures that lead to those behaviors. Conventional job search coaching is typically focused on coaching someone to make sure they are clear about what they want in a new employer, advise on one’s marketing documents like resume and cover letter, determine what jobs the client should apply for, and train them on how to apply for them on job boards. Advanced job search coaching, in addition to all the activities we mentioned for conventional job search, trains you on how to build a network of advocates that can help you get in front of employers for the 38% jobs that are not advertised. It also includes advanced interview coaching, which teaches you not only how to answer types of interview questions but also how to ask questions to get more offers and be armed with arguments to use in salary negotiation. Using advanced job search coaching, you may end up competing with far fewer competitors and even become the “inside” candidate!
What do you do in the career coaching sessions?
  1. Prior to the first session, you complete three items: personality assessment, Career Strategy Assignment 1, and your career worksheet.
  2. Using this information and our conversation, we identify your strengths and weaknesses, career preferences, skills, timeline, etc.
  3. For clients who are considering a career change, you use our proprietary tool to narrow down the best options, based on the above criteria.
  4. Using your personality information and your goals, we jointly agree on your branding strategy and an implementation plan that works for you.
  5. We teach and coach you on our Executive Access and Networking Genius techniques to break into positions that are not even advertised.
  6. We identify where you are stuck, make course corrections, and use our Inner Game technology make sure you remain motivated to succeed.

Can you help with career change coaching if I live in another state or country?
Yes. We have had clients all over the world; location makes no difference. Career change coaching services are typically done by Zoom, and we have both noon-time and evening times Eastern available to accommodate different time zones.
Will you put me in touch with recruiters/headhunters?
If your LinkedIn profile is search engine optimized for the kind of position you want, recruiters/headhunters will find you on LinkedIn when they have a job that fits you. Our clients who get our LinkedIn service are contacted by 8 recruiters on average! While contacting recruiters/headhunters isn’t usually a great use of your time—unless they specialize in your field—we do give you contact information for at least 14 of them in the guide we provide with your drafts.  While our career change coaches are not recruiters, you will receive career change coaching from highly skilled, deeply experienced, certified professionals.
