What is a cover letter, and why is it important?
Most people understand the importance of a resume, but some people think a cover letter is somehow less important.
This is a mistake—a cover letter is a critical tool to help you stand out from other job applicants. It’s also an opportunity to provide a more personal touch than your resume.
Your cover letter includes some of the same details as your resume, but it chooses specific facts to highlight based on the job for which you are going. In essence, it creates a bridge between the job description on the one side and your resume on the other.
That’s why the best cover letters are tailored to the job requirements of a
specific job. Your resume might be the same from one job application to another (although we coach our clients to always tailor), but since a cover letter is meant to be personal, it must be unique. You can’t use the same cover letter for every job you apply for, or your lack of effort will be apparent and annoying to employers.
A good cover letter tells a story, and if you’ve done any research on how stories work, you already know that every good story has 3 parts:
The beginning of a good cover letter is the introduction, which should be unusual enough to stand out from other cover letters. The YES cover letter does not begin with the usual, “I am writing to express my interest in the X position” but rather with something that engages the reader emotionally.
The middle of your cover letter should highlight how you’ve achieved specific work and life goals that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. Employers know that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, so your best relevant accomplishments will make them excited about what you can do for them.
The end of your cover letter should how your employment will benefit them specifically and make a request for an interview.
In some respects, cover letters are just like resumes in that the research says that you only have 6 seconds to get an employer’s attention with your resume. The same is true of your cover letter.
And because only 2% of resumes result in an interview, your cover letter must also stand out and make your application among the top 2% so that you get into the interview pile.
